My business, Mistral Hill Country Kitchen, is a small selection of handmade products which includes My Favourite Dukkah; Daisy’s Orange Almond Liqueur Marmalade; Alby’s Maple Syrup Onion Marmalade; Dad’s Mustard Pickles; Gran’s Spicy Tomato Chutney; and Hot Lover’s Chilli Tomato Pickle. The products’ uniqueness comes from the fact that they are my own creations or twists on old favourites, with flavour paramount. They are only sold locally in Tenterfield and through our website, www.mistralhill-tenterfield.com.au/
Why did you get into this line of work?
Moving back to the country and wanting to pursue my passion for delicious food and cooking.
What do you find most and least satisfying about it?
The most satisfying aspect is the joy you give to people. The least satisfying part is standing on my feet for long periods of time.
What do you think is the biggest challenge and opportunity in your industry?
[People being aware] that you get what you pay for and to buy local. Getting the word out about our business and products.
What are you most proud of in your work?
I’m proud of my creations and their quality. They are handmade from fresh produce in season which, where possible, is sourced locally.
Who do you most admire?
I admire all those women on the land who do everything with love and dedication. I grew up on a property near Barraba and watched my mother grow all her own vegetables and fruit to feed a family of five children. The orange marmalade is named after my mother.
What is your favourite time of the day?
I love afternoons with our beautiful sunsets.
What is your favourite invention?
I would have to say my favourite invention is my stove - I wouldn’t be without it.
What do you love to do in your spare time?
I enjoy entertaining with the best of friends and family.
The final word:
Be happy, love life, and ‘drink and eat with a grateful heart’.
