I’M MORTIFIED at a glaring omission I made in editing my own letter to the editor (The NDL yesterday).

My apologies for a doozy of an error.
In questioning “all the boatstoppers and conservatives in the Tamworth community”, I somehow lopped off a very important part of the sentence.
It should have read: “I have a question for all the boatstoppers and conservatives in the Tamworth community who are in favour of such a harsh regime, and I know there’s unfortunately a few of you.”
That error unfortunately implies that all politically conservative people are inhumane monsters who support our government’s atrocious treatment of asylum seekers, which I know first-hand could not be further from the case, and is a suggestion that I would never intentionally make
Once again, my apologies, and I hope that the letter, even though it grossly misrepresented me in that way, will at least stir meaningful debate about the government’s shameful treatment of asylum seekers.
