Country Fire Service spokesperson Connie Hassouros said the fires were being fueled by a band of lightning moving across the state.
The worst of 19 fires burned at Port Boston in the lower Eyre Peninsula and Woolshed Flat in the state's mid-north.
"At Port Boston there were 50 fire fighters on the scene, 16 appliances and two bulk water carriers," she said.
"They were supported by four water bombers."
The fire started at Point Boston about 12.40pm after a lightning storm passed through the area and was burning in an easterly direction in thick scrub towards the Point Boston residential development and abalone farms.
It was under control by 4pm.
Fires across South Australia
By mid-afternoon Tuesday, Country Fire Service crews were attending a grass fire near Eden Valley in the Barossa Ranges and another which broke out at Randell Road, Tungkillo, located 25 kilometres north-east of Mannum.
Just after 3pm reports were made concerning grass fires at Bremer Road, Murray Bridge, Jervois Road, White Sands and Annie Lane at Rockleigh.
Warnings as lightning front moves through the state
Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said a weather warning had been issued for most of South Australia as the thunderstorm front moved through.
"It's a low pressure trough causing all the lightning," she said.
"There has been strong wind gusts including 70 kilometres per hour at Murray Bridge.
"The instability may last through tomorrow but it will do nothing to reduce the heat."
