A critical incident investigation team has been established to examine the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash near Moree.
It was 11pm on Monday when a vehicle travelling west left the Carnarvon Highway and hit a tree, about 4km north of Moree.
The Holden sedan split in two on impact, ejecting two men.
One man died at the scene; while he is yet to be formally identified, it’s believed he is aged in his 20s from Moree.
A 24-year-old man, also from Moree, was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital suffering critical head, leg and internal injuries.
The sedan had travelled past a stationary RBT site that was operating on the Carnarvon Highway.
Police were attempting to catch up to the vehicle when they located it crashed.
Oxley Local Area Command officers will conduct the inquiry.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area where possible as the Carnarvon Highway is closed in both directions between the Newell Highway and Billa Street. Local diversions are in place.
