Inverell police, paramedics, NSW Fire and Rescue and Inverell Volunteer Rescue Association attended the scene of the accident in Waratah Ave just before 7pm, and found a Toyota van had struck a power pole.
The accident had caused the pole to be severed about 1.5 metres from the ground, causing an electricity failure throughout Inverell for over an hour.
Police reported that the driver was nowhere to be seen, although they found a 15-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl near the scene of the accident suffering concussion, cuts and abrasions.
The children were taken to Inverell hospital where they remained overnight for observation.
Yesterday morning police arrested a man at an address in Inverell.
He was taken to Inverell hospital for treatment for minor injuries before being charged with driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, negligent driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol and failing to give details to owner of damaged property.
Inverell Inspector Rowan O’Brien said alcohol and excessive speed were believed to be major contributing factors in the incident.
The man was refused bail after a brief court appearance yesterday.
