I take issue with the opinion piece about my pet macaws written by your columnist John McFarlane, which appeared in your newspaper last Saturday.

I was both horrified and angry to read that Mr McFarlane reported to your readers that my older macaw Coco, a visitor in our new pet shop, told customers to “piss off”.
This is totally incorrect, damages the reputation of our business and also a delightful bird who does not recite bad language. Also, Coco has only been in the store twice since it opened four months ago.
Had Mr McFarlane checked his facts he would have found that out for himself.
Coco does at times say “Hello” and “Step up”. Our younger macaw Rio also says “Hello”.
“Hello” and “Step up” are a long way removed from “piss off” and are a cheerful welcome to people who admire these birds when they visit our Bridge St business, Macawsome Pets.
Mr McFarlane’s column received an angry response from our customers and friends who know the birds and they expressed their disgust over social media sites like Facebook, including The Northern Daily Leader’s page.
We have had many visitors to our store and none have been offended by our pet macaws, unlike the offence Mr McFarlane’s That’s Life column has caused.
