Strong winds and heavy rain took away the opportunity to host the event in its normal location on the grounds of the Woolen Mill, and after looking at alternatives, the call was made on Saturday morning to change the date.
Nundle Events and Groups manager Teree Burr said it was impossible to do the picnic justice without the right atmosphere.
"We tried to look at alternative indoor options around Nundle, and there were certainly a couple of plan Bs in the wet weather," she said.
"But it just doesn't have the some atmosphere as sitting in the beautiful grounds of the Woolen Mill and enjoying a day outdoors.
"So we did decide collaboratively and unanimously to postpone it for two weeks and hopefully we'll be clear of all this weather and have some sunshine on the 10th of April."
The tickets will all be held over until the new date and ticket holders were notified of the decision on Saturday.
The Nundle Picnic is one of the largest events of the year for the town, especially with the cancellation of the Go for Gold Festival, and it drew more than 150 visitors last year.
Ms Burr apologised for the decision being last minute, but with last year's edition being such a success despite poor weather in the lead up, she said organisers wanted to give it every chance to go ahead.
"The committee and collaboration of businesses involved in the event monitored the situation very closely for the last three to four days," she said.
"And we made the decision very last minute which is not ideal for some but for this type of event you sort of have to leave it to the 11th hour and stack your cards on one side of the deck."
