Around 70 members from Tamworth Regional Landcare, The Pub Angling Club and OzFish assembled at the Peel River near the Jewry Street bridge, to plant more than 100 trees.
It added to the already strong contingent of young trees at the site, and according to OzFish North West's Anne Michie the location will be a popular destination for families in years to come.
"The old saying goes the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the next best time is today, so you've got to plant them and my little grandson was down there this morning; he's only six months old," she said.
"He'll get to climb those trees that we were planting today, so it's about the legacy you leave for the next generation."
Ms Michie has been planting at that site for a number of years and said she felt vindicated to hear a number of people commenting on how much nicer it now looks.
She said the region was lucky to get to celebrate National Tree Day, and believes the profile of it has risen dramatically in recent years.

"We're very fortunate up here in the north west that we're not in a lockdown situation so we were able to get out and plant some trees," she said.
"But even people that were in lockdown were encouraged to try and do something in their backyard, and if you haven't got a backyard, then even propagating some herbs on your window ceil.
"Just anything green, get out there and try and do it because it all makes a difference."
It was also a good day for The Pub Angling Club who had their new bench unveiled after the last one was stolen.
As well as planting, there was some tree maintenance work going on over the weekend with councillor Helen Tickle taking part in it along with other community members.
She said while natives are extremely resilient, it is important to keep an eye on young trees to make sure they get the right amount of care, and keeping them safe from pests is an important aspect.
