The city's local traffic committee recommended major changes to parking limits at four sites in the heart of the city, including an end to free parking at the city's town hall.

All but one of them shrink the time available, or eliminate free parking spaces in the CBD.

Councillor Helen Tickle, who sits on the Tamworth Regional Local Traffic Committee, said the recommendation was about improving consistency in the city's car parks.

She said the recommendation was based on consultation with business and the community and assessment of car park use rates by council staff.

"To keep the parking spaces rotating to enable more people to use the businesses in that area," she said.

"The idea is to standardise the parking throughout the city, the parking limits. It's always debatable about whether we should have as much paid parking, or not."

Every free car park at the back of the Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall is set to be changed to two-hour metered parking, with four-hour parks also to be reduced to two-hour.

Parking machines are set to be installed on Bourke Street, with on-street parking between Peel Street and Marius Street to become paid two-hour metered parking. The car parks had been free two-hour spots.

There will also be major changes for parking at both Fitzroy Street and White Street, between Peel Street and Marius Street.

Parking time limits on both roads will be shrunk to two hours from four.

Parking is set to become easier in just one location.

Several car parks on Kable Avenue, near Officeworks, are set to be converted from two-hour metered parking to become free to use. Parking meters would be removed. The changes reflect Tamworth Regional Council's new parking strategy.
