The $170,000 upgrade involves installing overhead lights along the river bank for about 2.3km, between Scott Road and Bligh Street.
Council said it would help residents enjoy a walk in the park at "any time of day".
The next stages of the upgrade will see Calala Lane and Scott Road also lit up, at a cost of $620,000.
The funding has come from a federal government local infrastructure fund.
