The Natural Resources Access Regulator (NRAR) is on its way to observe water management practices.

It's time for landholders to check their compliance with water laws before the regulator visits their properties, NRAR west region water regulation director Greg Abood said.

"The majority of water users want to do the right thing and follow the water laws," he said.

"It's a matter of better understanding them, we want to ensure water users understand the rules that apply to them and their properties."

The visits are part of the water regulator's routine monitoring program that started in October 2020.

The plan is to gather data on compliance to gain a broader picture of how and if water laws are being understood and followed across the Murray Darling Basin.

Regulators will visit properties in Goondiwindi, Texas, Mungindi, Tenterfield, Ashford, Glen Innes and Upper Horton.

On the visits, NRAR officers will confirm water activities are compliant and all landholders will be contacted and given notice ahead of a visit to give them the opportunity to confirm their water activities are compliance with their individual conditions.

Mr Abood said it's important for NRAR to proactively identify non-compliance to ensure water is shared fairly for generations to come.

NRAR's routine monitoring program saw the regulator expand its presence across regional NSW with the establishment of five new teams based in Dubbo, Tamworth and Deniliquin.

NRAR's routine monitoring team will travel across the west of NSW between October 2020 and September 2021 meeting with the community to help them understand their obligations.
