A man is in custody after a car crashed into Lightning Ridge Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officers attached to Central North Police District were alerted after a Toyota Camry crashed through a front fence and into the foyer of the building on Opal Street about 5.10am.
A 38-year-old Lightning Ridge man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody, a police spokesperson confirmed.

Police released photos of the incident and the building has sustained serious damage to the front doors and foyer. It was unmanned at the time, police said.
Investigators said inquiries into the crash are continuing.
