The cancellation of three zone championships in November due to bushfires meant there was a much larger contingent of athletes at the Region 1 Little Athletics Championships in Tamworth.

The event was held at the Centre of Sporting Excellence on the weekend. The some 800 competitors was about 200 more than usual, said Adam Jolliffe, of Little Athletics NSW.
"It was a big tester for the new facility," Jolliffe said, adding that it "went really well".
Athletes from Forster to the Queensland border attended the event, which served as a qualifer for the state championships in Sydney this year.
