Boxing Day sales give retailers much need boost after slow quarter

In Tamworth, most of the action was contained to Peel Street, in between Brisbane and White streets. All of the big chain stores were open, while a number of small businesses took the opportunity to make up for a slow quarter.

The ongoing drought has been tough on retailers, but Tamworth Business Chamber executive officer Sam Rains said businesses were "learning to diversify in these tough times".

"Some are doing it through online capabilities, some are adjusting sale times and duration," Mr Rains said.

"We've seen a few shops throw in early boxing day sales, and we're expecting them to run for a week or two to try and entice a few more feet through the door."

Kate Nugent was on the hunt for some Boxing Day sales and said there was a great vibe in the air.

"There's a buzz around, which is great for Tamworth and the region," she said.

"We noticed there are a couple of shops closed, but that's to be expected on a public holiday. There's still enough variation for us to get out and spend some coin to help our local economy."

Town and Country Boutique owner Vicki Pooley has opened her store on Boxing Day since the changes were introduced a few years ago.

"It's probably not quite as busy so far as previous years, but it has definitely been worthwhile opening," Ms Pooley said.

"It's great, there are lots of people in the street and everyone is enthusiastic, so it's good to see."
