FORMER Northern Region police commander Carlene York has been named the new State Emergency Services commissioner.

Ms York, who oversaw the hunt for Malcolm Naden in the Barrington Tops, was also the commander of human resources, commander of the Criminal Identification Specialist Branch and forensic services group director during her police career.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said Ms York was chosen after an extensive search and had "outstanding credentials" to lead more than 9000 volunteers during natural disasters.

"She has led emergency response operations so she understands the pressures volunteers face during a crisis," Mr Elliott said.
Ms York replaced acting commissioner Kyle Stewart, who will return to his assistant commissioner role with NSW Police.
"I know from experience how wonderful the SES volunteers are and how their commitment and bravery can save lives, keep property safe and help communities get back on their feet," Ms York said.
