The Bears ran away with the game in the second half with playing-coach Scott Blanch scoring two tries in the second half to help his side to a 54-22 win.
Meanwhile, the Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters and Dungowan Cowboys opened the season with a high-scoring affair.
The game got off to a flying start with the sides combining for four tries within the first 15 minutes of the game.
However, things settled down in the second half and the Roosters walked away with a 28-26 win over the Cowboys.
In reserve grade, the Manilla Tigers celebrated their return to Group 4 action with a 36-18 victory over the Gunnedah Bulldogs.
In a tight encounter, Kootingal-Moonbi was able to secure a 16-10 win over the South West Robins.
North Tamworth began it's reserve grade season with a 38-16 win over Werris Creek, while the club's league tag team also picked up a win over the Magpies 38-6.
Round one continues tomorrow as the Narrabri Blues play host to the Boggabri Roos.
Central North Rugby Union
The Gunnedah Red Devils caused one of the upsets of the season so far with a 36-29 victory over the Pirates at Gunnedah Rugby Park.
The inform-Walcha Rams took no prisoners in their clash against the Quirindi Lions, walking out beat 87-17. Rams' breakaway Sione Kamoto scored six tries in the 70-point win.
Doubles from Daniel Sweeney, Damien Meppem and Jono Spain helped Moree defeat Barraba/Gwydier 65-19, while Scone defeated Inverell 37-17.
New England Rugby Union
In first grade, Albies secured a 31-23 victory over the Armidale Blues, while Robb College found a way to defeat Barabarians 47-20.
The Armidale Blues picked up a 26-7 win over Albies in second grade.
In third grade, the Armidale Blues scored a 45-14 win over Albies, while Tamworth took the points after Glen Innes forfeited.
In the round's women's games, the Blues hung on to beat Albies 20-19 in the first game before going down 22-0 in the second.
AFL North West
The Tamworth Swans run at the top of the AFL North West ladder has come to an abrupt end at the hands of the Gunnedah Bulldogs 21-19-145 to 7-8-50.
It was also a tough day for the Swans women's team as they went down to the Tamworth Roos 3-10-28 to 1-3-9.
The Roos men's team also tasted victory, accounting for the Narrabri Eagles 21-18-144 to 2-5-17.
Meanwhile, reigning premiers the Inverell Saints continued their winning ways securing a hard-fought 13-12-90 to 12-4-76 win over the New England Nomads in Armidale.
The Moree Suns had the bye.
In the round's other women's game, the Inverell Saints defeated the New England Nomads 3-9-27 to 2-2-14, while in the junior game the Inverell Saints 12-18-120 defeated the Nomads 6-3-39.
