Georgie Bowyer, now living in Sydney, admitted the competition was well outside her comfort zone.
The 19-year-old said while she'd never been in a competition like Miss Universe before, she was "super glad" to be involved.
"I met a lot of other girls in Sydney - I'm obviously not from here, so it was great to meet a lot of girls my age doing similar things," she said.
The fashion business and personal trainer student got a message off the event organisers on social media asking her to apply, first through an online application followed by an interview. She made the cut and was one of 25 girls to make the NSW finals.
In the month leading up to the state finals, Ms Bowyer represent the Miss Universe brand at a number of events with the competition's sponsors.

While she wasn't one of the five girls to make it through to the national round of Miss Universe, she was chosen to be the competition's NSW charity ambassador, and will still be at the finals night.
Every year Miss Universe supports the childrens' charity Toybox. Ms Bowyer raised more than $7600 for the charity - the most out of her fellow NSW competitors.
"It's a charity raising money for sick and disable child, and the money raised goes towards Starlight rooms in Ronald McDonald Houses to give kids a little get away from whatever each child is going through," Ms Bowyer said.
She's "very excited" to get started in the role.
"I'm really excited. I've always loved children, so I'm looking forward to be able to go and visit them, and help them through whatever treatment their having," she said.
"For the next year, I'll go to events and visit hospitals, and promote Toybox."
On June 14, she'll be vying for the national ambassador title at the Miss Universe Australia finals.
