Target has refused to either deny or confirm rumours that the Tamworth store will be permanently closing, instead issuing a short statement saying "stakeholders will be communicated well in advance of any planned change."

Rumours have been rife regarding the future of the Peel Street store after Target's parent company Wesfarmers, who also own Kmart, announced in June last year that dozens of its 305 stores would close as the company looks to reduce its footprint by 20 per cent.
On Monday The Leader directly questioned Target in regards to if the store would be closing, and if so when.
In response to those questions, and the pending story, Target released the following statement.

"It is business as usual for Target, and all stakeholders will be communicated with well in advance of any planned change to Target’s store network," the statement read.
"We look forward to continuing our relationship with the communities where we operate and remain committed to providing our customers quality fashion and basics at low prices.
"As always, and with great respect, our team members will be communicated with first if there are any planned changes to our stores.”
The store closure announcement came on the back of a $195 million loss in 2016.
Last year Wesfarmers' CEO of department stores Guy Russo told Fairfax the brand was shifting to a mid-tier boutique along the lines of Uniqlo, Zara and H&M, rather than continuing to compete with Kmart and Big W.
