Tamworth Fire and Rescue station commander Glenn Willsallen said Sunday’s incident was the latest in a recent string of car related fires.
“There have been quite a few car fires lately,” commander Willsallen said.
“It is obviously pretty concerning considering how dry it is and this happened in such a built up area.
“I’m not too sure how many exactly we have had recently, but it is one of those swings and roundabouts things, sometimes we can a while without one and then we see a string of them like this.”
After receiving the initial calls to come to the scene, commander Willsallen said the fire was quickly brought under control quickly.
“To be honest it can be surprising how quickly these things can get going,” he said.
“However, after being called at about 7am we had the fire out within about five minutes.
“We were quite lucky because where the car was left was in a bit of a vacant block.
“Fortunately, the are is well maintained by the council and the fire was started on a concrete basketball court, so it couldn’t spread.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
“These sorts of things can have really serious consequences so if anyone did see something they should come forward,” commander Willsallen said.
“It’s also a good time to remind everyone to always report suspicious fires and to give as much detail about the fire’s location as possible to give fire crews the best chance of getting there as quickly as possible.”
