TAMWORTH man Hayden Pannell had no idea that a good deed he did on his lunch break would be witnessed by the whole city.
Yesterday, amidst a heavy downpour, The Leader snapped Mr Pannell running over to lend a women his umbrella as she cross the road on Peel Street.
When The Leader posted the photos on social media, there was an overwhelming response from the community, applauding his efforts.
“I didn’t expect to it to go so far, my mum’s over in Perth and she saw it all the way over there,” Mr Pannell said.
“My main concern was that given the weather was so full on, she could slip over.
“She had her car parked on that side, so I walked her over. She said she was fine, and that it was extremely nice for someone to come over and help her.
“I didn’t get her name – she told me she’s got four sons as we chatted, and one of them is at the pilot training school.”

Despite holding the esteemed title of The Leader’s most liked Instagram photo of all time, Mr Pannell said he wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about.
“Really, it shouldn’t even be a second thought to help out other people,” he said.
“It’s what everyone wants at the end of the day, it’s just not what everyone does.
“People love to see that sort of thing in their community. Especially in a place like Tamworth.
“I lived in Sydney for years, you could see it get worse and worse, and no one really cared about anyone.”
