A 29-year-old man has been charged with assaulting the doctor as he left the emergency department on Sunday.

Police allege the man, who went to the hospital for medical reasons, punched the doctor in the face about 11am.

The 28-year-old doctor was assisted by staff and police were called.

The 29-year-old man has been charged with common assault and was issued a court attendance notice to answer the charge in Tamworth Local Court in December.

Meanwhile, a driver has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after crashing his car on Calala Lane.

About 1.40am on Monday, police were called after the Toyota sedan slammed into a tree. The force of the impact snapped the tree in half.

The male driver was taken to hospital as a precaution but suffered only minor injuries.

Police said they are examining all factors including speed to determine the cause of the crash.
