The political and personal struggles between Jesus and Judas makes for an explosive and emotional production.
Tamworth Musical Society, who celebrate 130 years of bringing musical theatre to the city, bring this “made in Tamworth” production to the Capitol Theatre stage opening Friday 26 October to Saturday, November 10.
Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar has kept its place in modern theatre since exploding onto the music scene in 1970 as a rock opera album and then making the rapid rise to Broadway in 1971 resulting in five Tony Award nominations.
It was May 1972 when the first full Australian production of this controversial hit show was first staged. It has since been staged all over the world through the decades both professionally and by countless amateur theatre groups.
In this contemporary interpretation, the role of Jesus Christ is played by local doctor, Josh Hatton.
This role has always been on Josh’s 'bucket list'.
Josh, originally from Dubbo, has performed in many theatrical productions since he was a young boy. His family were always involved in the theatre and as Josh said “it just rubbed off”.
He loves all aspects of the theatre and is delighted at the prospect of introducing his young family to the joys of live performance. This role has always been on Josh’s “bucket list” and he’s very proud to be able to perform in his 10th TMS show in this iconic role.
Judas is played by local entertainer, Chris Langston, with his powerhouse voice that just keeps on going. He plays the role with compassion and justness – the struggle between loyalty and betrayal being just as relatable today as it was when first written.
Another notable character in the production is Mary Magdeline, played by local singer/actor Katt Nolland. This is Katt’s first principal role with the society and although she has played many support roles, Katt’s true voice and calm, charismatic manner makes for an outstanding performance - she is certainly one to watch in the future.
The ensemble should, and will, be applauded for their performance throughout the whole show. They are on stage for almost the entire performance.
