From “30-to-40-point floggings” to finals footy. The Gunnedah Red Devils improvement in the Central North women’s sevens competition has been immense.
Gunnedah’s first game of the season resulted in a 43-nil loss to Pirates but this Saturday the Red Devils will take on Narrabri at Walcha in the qualifying final after finishing fourth on the ladder.
They were to play Scone first for a spot in the qualifying final but the Brumbies have forfeited that game.
“It’s going to be a tough competition but we are a team that is now competitive,” Gunnedah’s Sarah Stewart said.
“We’re coming in with confidence that we can be competitive and it’s finals football, so anything can happen.”
Last weekend, the Red Devils notched up two wins – 22-5 and 22-10 – against an understrength Scone.
“The team played really well. Everyone was just working together well. As a team, that’s a big thing [we strive for],” Stewart said.
