Outside centre Jacob Booby and winger Will Morley both crossed for doubles as the Blue Boars notched their fifth win to join Gunnedah and Barraba on 28 points.
“It was pretty good. We played fairly well,” Blue Boars coach Dylan Duncan said.
He was particularly happy with the forward play.
“The forwards have come a long way. They’re starting to function well as a unit and that’s starting to show in our results,” he said.
The Lions kept fighting and fighting, Duncan said, and while the Blue Boars never looked like being in trouble, they weren’t able to really put the game to bed either after leading 24-nil at half-time.
One of the reasons for that was a big penalty count against them, which is something they’ll need to work on before the Bulls game in a fortnight.
“We’ve got a bit of discipline we need to address,” he said.
Breakaway Jack Maunder was busy around the field and their best.
“He carried the ball well and did all the things that a good number six does,” Duncan said.
Maunder’s efforts also earned him the Nick Tooth Memorial Cup.
In memory of the former Lion, the award is presented to the player that is judged to have played the game the way that “Toothy” would have.
Duncan also made mention of Booby and hooker Scott Gale. The latter had his best game of the year.
The Bulls’ clash will complete the first round.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Duncan said.
“Moree will be a good test. They’re playing some good football.”
As are his side, and Duncan said the Blue Boars will “take some beating from now on”.
