Director Bridget Guthrie said the exhibition had an “amazing amount of power and energy about and a real strong sense of connection to country” and hoped it would enlighten visitors.
“I think it’s important to showcase contemporary Indigenous art and the fact that all art is a changing and evolving,” Ms Guthrie said.
“Often we can think of Indigenous art in a stereotyped way and this examples quite different pieces.”
Most of the artworks are by senior Aboriginal men who “were born and lived to manhood before contact with white Australia”.
“Initially they painted in ochres and things like that,” Ms Guthrie said.
“Now they have access to all of these amazing colours and the strength and energy in them is just stunning.”
