The catchy song is the second single from the artist’s fourth studio album My Soundtrack and is about finding chemistry with someone new.
While officially released this month, the single is one of Cornell’s most played tracks on radio.
“It’s Only Midnight is one of the more light and fun songs on the album, as there’s some pretty personal songs on this record,” the singer-songwriter and musician said.
“It gets stuck in your head and I really enjoy playing this song live.
“I have some more personal songs on the record that are my favourites but all the songs are really quite special, new and fresh.”
He said the song was about the feeling of the chemistry on a first date.
“There is no better feeling, you meet someone and there is some kind of chemistry going on,” he said.
“You go on that first or second date and it’s all the little things. Everything is so fresh and new, you can’t wait to get a text the next day and can’t wait to hear their voice.
“It’s probably the most light hearted song on the record and I wanted the video to be the same way.
Cornell has just come off Adam Brand’s Get On Your Feet national tour where he opened for the award-winning country artist and is a regular member of his band and serves as musical director.
The Sydney artist has been warmly welcomed into the country music fold, being a 2014 CMC Music Awards New Oz Artist of the Year finalist, and has been nominated again, this time for Male Artist Of The Year at the 2017 CMC Music Awards.
Cornell also enjoyed eight weeks in the Noumber one spot on the iTunes Country Chart as part of Adam Brand & The Outlaws.
“This year has been a busy one for me, I’ve been popping up all over the place,” he said. “But I always talk about Adam because he had a massive influence on me in the country music world especially.
“He’s one of those guys who loves taking people under his wing and a love of where I’ve gotten to has been through Adam.”
