It was pitcher’s duel in the Warriors-Cougars match with Brock Ridgewell (7.2 inn; 5 hits; 10 Ks; 153 pitches) and John Warren (8 inn; 11 hits; 6 Ks; 113 pitches) going head to head in a consistently tight game.
Cougar Aaron Mackay couldn’t find the strike zone early on and was replaced after conceding four runs early.
Despite outhitting the Warriors 11-6, the Cougars couldn’t overcome the four-run first inning deficit with the Ridgewell brothers Brock (a single and two doubles) and Ben (two singles) leading the charge back as Warriors won 5-3.
The Outlaws did more than enough to get a 13-3 win against Gunnedah. They used three pitchers and amassed 16 hits, three each to Josh Shaw and Brad Smith who are battling for a batting trophy after Cam Beat has been laid up with injury.
Smith started on the mound and threw three innings for two hits. Tony Cornish and Masa Sukuki threw two each in the seven-inning game.
Best hitter for Gunnedah was Jody Revel with two hits and a run.
B GRADE
The Cavaliers have continued their red-hot form with a come from behind win against the Outlaws.
Jeremy Bird started for the Outlaws and despite his efficiency, left the mound before his usual four innings due to injury.
This opened up the opportunity for the Cavs.
Some wayward pitching from Wolfenden, Grimble and Smith was enough of a chance for the Cavs to storm back and score the 12-11 come from behind win.
Ashton Williams and Coen Hopwood-Young were the best at the plate for the Cavs with two hits apiece.
The Outlaws’ Ollie Grimble and Jeremy Bird also had two hits each in the high-scoring match.
The Giants took down the Warriors in their B grade match 14-5 at Tamworth's Field of Dreams on Saturday afternoon.
Gunnedah players Jason Wong, Jeff Haung, Roo Bowen and Ben Ridgewell all contributed two hits apiece to their offence but it was errors and poor pitching that killed the Warriors’ chances.
Having dug themselves too deep a hole to climb out of, the Warriors were unfortunately never in the contest.
Brad Redshaw (2), Vali Orcher (2), and Zoe Green had hits for the Warriors.
Matt Bryant pitched the complete game for the Giants, allowing only five hits and striking out the same.
Brendon Allen started on the mound for the Warriors before being relieved by Brad Redshaw with both hurlers allowing four hits each. Next week, the Cougars travel to SportUNE Armidale for A and B grade games. The matches will commence at 11.45am. Gunnedah take on the Warriors in Tamworth in A grade and the other B grade game sees the Cavs play Gunnedah.
