For as long as he can remember, the room has been a home-away from home – now, the nine-year-old Spring Ridge local wants to give back to the organisation that’s kept him smiling in between doctor’s appointments.
Jack was born atopic and has severe allergies, asthma and eczema. When he’s well, he takes six dosages of medication a day and a simple virus puts him in hospital.
Jack’s mum Kristine said Jack was “allergic to pretty much all foods”.
“We had to do lots of food challenges with the specialists,” Ms Burgess said.
“We just managed to beat his egg allergy, but it took four years of doing things every single day. He’s still anaphylaxic to dairy, so we are working on that.”
But despite all this, Ms Burgess said her son was “the happiest boy, who loves to share that around”.
Every Friday night for the past four months, Jack has been selling tickets at the Spring Ridge Royal Hotel for a raffle he organised himself.
He’s raised about $1400, which is all going to the Starlight Foundation.
To cap off the fundraiser, the Burgess family and the Spring Ridge community have organised the Spring Ridge Starlight Bush Rally on Saturday, July 15, to coincide with the town’s annual bonfire and firecracker night.
The 50km course has a set of challenges and a quiz for each car that enters, at $10 a car.
“This is something for anyone, you don’t have to have a souped-up car or anything – the local pub is taking its courtesy bus,” Ms Burgess said.
“We’ll have morning tea up on the hill overlooking Spring Ridge and then come back to the pub for a barbecue. Then we’ll head down to the local rec ground for some old fashion family fun, with sack races, three-legged races, a lucky dip and maybe a game of bush cricket.”
Some of the money raised from the bonfire and firecracker night will also be donated to the Starlight Foundation. The bush rally will rev up from the Royal Hotel at 9am.
