The Barraba-man received his Order of Australia Medal at a ceremony in Sydney for his service to veterans and their families.
Mr Sweeney told The Leader he was very proud and honoured to receive the award, but it was hearing from friends and family of local ex-servicemen that the veterans would have been proud of his achievement which meant just as much.
Mr Sweeney, 48, has worked with the Barraba Military History Group to ensure the small town’s contribution in service is preserved with a number of plaques installed in the centre of town.
He has been member of of Barraba RSL since 1995.
