Petbarn and the RSPCA have found 123 dogs and cats homes over the past financial year and the rehoming rate is not slowing down.
Tamworth store assistant manager Jason Tobin said they could rehome three or more dogs a week, depending on what breeds they had in.
“It can sometimes be easier to rehome smaller dogs if elderly people are looking,” he said.
“Bigger dogs need the right yard, exercise and the owners need to realise they are a big dog, so have to accommodate that.”
Mr Tobin said they also rehomed plenty of cats, with many people having an older cat and then adopting younger cats.
“If we have someone come in and they’re interested, we’ll ask them some questions about what their intentions are for the dog, which is our biggest concern,” he said.
“We get everyone in the family to meet with the dog and, if there are other animals, we have a meet-and-greet at a neutral location and we assess it from there. Then we decide whether it’s a suitable match. All animals are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed, and come with their own blue book, which has [a list of] when everything is due.”
Across Petbarn’s 100 pet adoption centres in Australia, more than 5000 animals have been saved this past financial year alone, which is double the amount of adoptions Petbarn centres had in the same period last year.
Petbarn’s The Pet Foundation chairman Paul Wilson thanked the Tamworth community for helping them reach this adoption milestone.
“We are very passionate about helping pets find the perfect home and, on behalf of The Pet Foundation and Petbarn, I would like to thank locals for adopting a furry friend from our Tamworth adoption centre,” he said.
“We couldn’t have reached this incredible milestone without the support and generosity of Tamworth pet lovers.
“Pets can positively impact our lives in so many different ways, and we’re glad to play a role in not only helping find homes for pets in need but also enriching the lives of Australians.”
