EARLIER: A TWO-year-old child has died in a horrific accident near Inverell on Tuesday
The toddler was killed in an accident involving machinery on a property near Bundarra on Tuesday morning.
Following an emergency call to triple zero about mid-morning, emergency services including police and paramedics rushed to the scene, but there was little they could do.
The toddler died at the scene.
This quite simply is a horrendous tragedy.
- – Inspector Roger Best
A crime scene was established, and specialist forensic officers as well as New England detectives were called in.
Investigators spent much of the day at the scene and, late today, police were unable to comment on the circumstances surrounding the death of the child.
New England Inspector Roger Best said officers’ thoughts were with the family at this time.
“This is quite simply a horrendous tragedy beyond the comprehension of those not directly involved,” he told The Leader.
“Emergency service personnel will be offered counselling.
“However, any angst suffered by our people pales into insignificance to what devastation the family is now experiencing.”
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are continuing.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
