Danika Boland travelled the length and breadth of Australia in her role as 2015 Miss Rodeo Australia and attended the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo (USA) in July with Warwick Rodeo Queen Georgie Stower, the judging of Miss Rodeo Canada and Canadian Finals Rodeo along with judging of Miss Rodeo America and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo shortly after attending our own National Finals held in conjunction with the Warwick Rodeo.
Australian Professional Rodeo Association office manager Karen Burraston said Miss Rodeo Australia had a role to promote the sport within Australia and internationally.
“If Miss Rodeo Australia is at a rodeo, she will be involved in the grand entry and helps each committee promote their rodeo,” Burraston said.
Rodeo does more than most sports to herald the start of a major event.
The grand entry is a short presentation by a small number of riders who gallop into the arena with flags and set the scene for non-stop action at a rodeo.
During the next 12 months, the new Miss Rodeo Australia will proudly carry the national flag at many events.
Four rodeo committees have chosen a keen horsewoman to be their entrant in the Miss Rodeo Australia judging.
Nikea Coulson will represent Carrieton in South Australia at this weekend’s judging along with Tori Rafton from Warwick (Qld), Katy Scott from Cloncurry (Qld) and Darwin (NT) cowgirl Daphne Tun.
The entrants will dine with the judges, supporters and members of the public tonight at Rupert’s Bar and Grill in Warwick. Coachmans Inn have sponsored accommodation for the ladies during the weekend.
They will be judged on their horsemanship tomorrow at the Warwick Showgrounds and then the new Miss Rodeo Australia will be crowned at a gala function and buffet dinner at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre in Warwick tomorrow night.
Tickets for the two dinners are for sale at APRA office on 07 4661 8183.
The Australian Professional Rodeo Association has three rodeos tomorrow – Wilmington in South Australia, Wagga in New South Wales and Ulverstone in Tasmania.
One of the riders to watch at Wilmington will be national breakaway roping record holder Candy Michaelis (Lewiston, SA) who set a new record late in 2015.
Wagga bull rider Sean Lynch started the Christmas Run late last year with a winning score of 90 at Myrtleford and has the form on the board to win at his hometown rodeo.
At Ulverstone in Tasmania, Luke Hamilton will start favourite in the steer wrestling after winning round one of last year’s Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships.
