It’s the second year the TBA has condensed the junior grand finals into the one day, and was again a success, TBA vice-president Jason Darcy said.
“There were some entertaining games and it was well supported by the town.”
He thought, if anything, it actually worked better than last year’s inaugural gala day.
“We had free-throw and three-point competitions between the grand finals,” he said.
The bigger boys also produced some big dunks, which is always exciting.
There were three grand finals that couldn’t be played due to other commitments.
They are being played this week. Carinya and Calrossy Angels matched up in the 7/8 Girls’ B grand final last night .
St Nic’s Rockets and Manilla South will contest the 3/4 Boys A final tonight with South and Manilla meeting in the 5/6 Girls A decider tomorrow night.
Calrossy sides won four of the grand finals.
Three of them were all-Calrossy affairs, with the Stars beating the Neptunes 24-nil in the 3/4 Girls’ final, the Suns pipping the Asteroids 15-14 in the 3/4 Boys’ B, after leading by one at half-time, and the Rockets accounting for the Comets 34-27 in the 5/6 Girls’ B final on the back of a 32-point haul from Anika Earsman.
The Bravehearts were the other side to prevail, defeating the Oxley Rockets 43-23 in the 7/8 Boys’ A.
Max Chillingworth, meanwhile, shot 28 points to help the McCarthy (MCC) Heat get home 49-37 over the Farrer Pacers in the 11/12 Boys A final.
It was one of three divisions McCarthy sides won.
The MCC Pistons in the 7/8 Boys’ B and MCC Rubies in the 7/8 Girls’ A though had tighter tussles.
The Pistons edged out the Manilla Heat 38-35 while the Rubies stormed home in the second half to overrun the MCC Sapphires.
They outshot the Sapphires by 10 points to turn a five-point half-time deficit into a 46-41 win.
The 9/10 Boys’ A final was another closely fought game and saw the Farrer Lightning get up 37-32 over the Calrossy Barbarians after leading by just a point at half-time.
TPS Grizzlies (5/6 Boys’ A), St Eds Cougars (5/6 Boys’ B), Timbumburi Tornadoes (5/6 Boys’ C) and Peel (9/10 Girls) also won their deciders.
