26 young players attended last Saturday’s trials in Tamworth, forcing NIAS to lift its support, creating a boys’and girls’ squad, NIAS spokesman James Cooper said.
“We haven’t had separate squads before but will have 14 to 15 boys and 12 girls, a bit more than double of what we’ve had before.”
Steve Young has slipped into the head coach’s role, with long-serving coach Jeff Aldridge remaining as an assistant coach after many years of outstanding and invaluable service.
It was a busy weekend for NIAS, with mountain bike trials as well.
Seven mountain bikers will be inducted into NIAS later in the year while water polo and hockey trials will be held this weekend.
Water polo players between 13 and 17 will trial at the South and West War Memorial Pool, Scully Park tomorrow (9am start) while junior hockey players will trial at the Tamworth Hockey Complex, girls from 10am and boys from 1pm.
Applications to join the NIAS Junior Rugby Program are also open. Trials for the Under 14 program will be held at Tamworth Rugby Park on Sunday, November 2.
