MEMBERS of the Croppa Creek community will establish a fund to assist the family of slain Tamworth man Glendon Turner.
Organisers behind the appeal were working feverishly on Wednesday to set up a bank account to accept donations.
Mr Turner was a regular visitor to the Croppa Creek area through his work with the NSW Department of Environment and Heritage.
The 51-year-old was at a property near Talga Ln on Tuesday to serve a notice regarding illegal land clearing when a gunman opened fire.
Croppa Creek farmer Ian Robert Turnbull, 79, has been charged with Mr Turner's murder and fronted Moree Local Court on Wednesday where he was refused bail.
A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said the tight-knit community had been "ripped apart" by the tragedy.
"We just want some good to come of it," she said. "We didn't know him very well but he'd been in this district on and off for some time and everyone would have known of Glen."
Bec Morrissy, of Waggamba Landcare, is assisting the community with the appeal and said she hoped the account would be active today.
"He has done different work with different landholders in the area, but it's really a case of the Croppa Creek community being shocked at what's happened in their own backyard and really wanting to rally and help Glen's family," she said.
Mr Turner is survived by his wife, Alison, and two young children.
