The incident occurred in Petra Ave just before 11.20pm on Wednesday night after a disturbance in the street between four people.
“A verbal altercation has taken place in the vicinity of those premises. As a result one of the occupants has chased the victim and allegedly struck him in the back causing minor injuries,” Tamworth Acting Inspector Geoff Sharpe said.
Police will allege two of the men were armed with sharpening steels when the alleged attack occurred before two others managed to flee the scene.
An Ambulance NSW spokesperson confirmed paramedics were called to Robert St to reports a 19-year-old man had been stabbed in the back.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
Police were called to Petra Ave and spoke to two men before one was arrested at the scene.
A Tamworth man has been charged with reckless wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was granted conditional bail by police to front Tamworth Local Court next month.
Detectives have taken charge of the case and searched a vehicle at the scene before two sharpening steels were seized along with other items.
Acting Inspector Sharpe confirmed investigations were ongoing into the incident.
“Further enquiries are continuing in relation to other incidents reported to police in and around the area,” he said.
