On the back of three goals from Lachlan Wilson, it beat Tamworth Public School 6-2 at the Gipps St fields yesterday in round two.
The first round saw the side hand Timbumburi an 11-nil exit from the comp.
This was Tamworth Public’s first game after Westdale forfeited the first round.
A very tight and evenly matched first half saw Tamworth Public score first from a mistake at the back.
Soon after South evened the scores, and then went ahead 2-1 just before the break.
Tamworth Public coach Peter Brown said the team played fairly well in the first half, especially in defence.
Following the break, South was on top and had the majority of possession.
It didn’t take long for that possession to turn into goals as Wilson and the other strikers started getting plenty of ball up front.
South Tamworth coach Darrel Mole was very pleased with how the side performed.
“It is always a tough game against Tamworth Public and normally we meet in the regional final,” Mole said.
“Both sides were playing at a really good level in the first half.
“Our boys kept going at that level and I think that Tamworth just dropped off a bit.”
Half of the South Tamworth side are involved in the Northern Inland Football program, and a lot of them are also in the North West side playing in the State Championships next week.
Mole thinks they could go a long way in the competition because of the way they play as a team.
“We do have a couple of really good players but are even better as a team,” Mole said.
“They have great communication and can be very strong but anything can happen in
football.”
Wilson, Boedee Thompson and Lachlan Wesierski were the pick of South Tamworth although they were all on their game.
Year 4 Tamworth Public student Joshua Stanton was on debut and scored a goal in a great game.
He was joined by Jeremiah Barbara and Joshua Morris as the standouts.
South will go on to play the winner of Oxley Vale and Quirindi after next week’s state titles.
