A DAY after winning the North West regional final of the Errea Cup State CHS Boys’ Football Knockout in Tamworth, Oxley High added the regional State CHS Under 15 Boys’ Football Knockout to its trophy list in Armidale.
Two Mitch Edwards goals in the final seven minutes earned Oxley a 2-1 win over Armidale’s Duval High in Armidale yesterday, Edwards striking seven minutes from time and then breaking a 1-all deadlock with three minutes left with a brilliant long-range shot from outside the penalty box.
It was a frantic final seven or eight minutes, Oxley coach Wayne May said.
“It was a very good game of schoolboy football too,” he said.
“It was very exciting, with all the goals coming in the final seven or eight minutes.
“Mitch scored the first when he hit the cross bar with a shot, it bounced out and he knocked it back in with his head.
“Duval then equalised straight away and, while I started to think about extra-time and drop-off, Mitch hit one from outside the box on the right- hand side.
“Their goalie had no chance – it was a brilliant goal.”
Edwards and fellow striker Sam Williams-Glass worked hard up front while Matt Clarke was strong in the middle for Oxley, May said.
“Dave Ifield ran the backs well and Harrison Pettit made some great runs down the right but all the boys contributed.
“We didn’t create enough chances in the first half but in the second we had plenty of shots and tested their goalie.”
After beating Gunnedah High to win the open regional final on Wednesday, May was delighted to add the Under 15 regional title to Oxley’s trophy list and is hoping to snare a treble of wins when his Tamworth FC side tackles Demon Knights in a NIF Premier League crossover match in Armidale tomorrow.
He has some of his Oxley High open side turning out for FC.
“DK are going to be nice and tough up there,” May said.
“We will be at full strength – we look like having everyone right.”
There are no PL games in Tamworth, with three in Armidale, one in Inverell, one in Gunnedah and one in Guyra.
Guyra Caspers host Gunnedah United, Moree FC goes to Inverell and Gunnedah Imperial is at home to Wee Waa United.
PL heavyweights North Armidale United and Oxley Vale Attunga match up at Phil Wheaton Oval in Armidale, with DK hosting Tamworth FC at Rologas 1 and South Armidale United Scorpions tackling North Companions at Armidale Sportsground.
