The initiative is part of a campaign led by liquor manufacturer Diageo (which makes Bundaberg Rum) called “Don’t see a great festival wasted”, which encourages people to take the simple steps of drinking water and eating food when drinking alcohol.
The bottles of water will be provided free to patrons on the Festival Express shuttle buses, as well as at licensed venues in the city. Posters will also be on display to remind festival goers of how to stay in control.
Tamworth Hotel licensee Roger Rumble said the campaign was a positive initiative, with the festival seeing more people and more alcohol consumed.
“We support (Diageo) by selling their product during the festival, and they’re supporting the patrons,” Mr Rumble said.
Diageo Australia corporate relations director Bob Rayner said the campaign was designed to remind people how to drink responsibly, without preaching.
“We believe we can help by working with the wider industry, the local council, state government representatives and the festival organisers to promote the right consumer behaviours during a time of celebration for Tamworth – and for Australian country music lovers,” Mr Rayner said.
The campaign has been supported by Tamworth Regional Council and MP Kevin Anderson.
“We want to ensure the festival remains a vibrant and safe event, that visitors return to each year,” festival coordinator Kate Baker said.
