At Taree the Tamworth Under 16s lost their opening Stan Austin Shield game to Mid North Coast by 156 runs and in Tamworth the Under 14s were beaten by three wickets by Manning Valley.
At Ballina, the Tamworth Under 13s had a good win over Hornsby in their opening game of the Ballina Under 13 Carnival and the Tamworth Under 15s scratched out a two wicket win over an Armidale Invitational side in its opening game of the Walter Taylor Shield Under 15 Carnival in Armidale.
At Taree opening bowler Ryan Horton was no-balled out of the attack early after bowling three successive waste high no-balls.
That left a big hole in the side’s weaponry and MNC took full advantage hammering 307 from their 50 overs.
Inverell legspinner Richard Wilson was guesting with Tamworth and was the best of the bowlers, finishing with 2-53 while he also scored 22. Harrison Pettit (38) top scored while Ryan Horton rebounded to score 31 with the bat.
At Saunders Oval, Ballina, the Chris Paterson-coached Tamworth Under 13s had a great start, dismissing Hornsby for 158 and then chasing well to finish 7-164 and celebrate a three wicket win.
Leg spinning Toby Whale was the star, taking 3-11 from his 10 overs and then opening the batting and retiring unbeaten on 40.
“It’s the best I’ve seen him bowl,” Paterson said.
“But it was a really good team effort. They batted, bowled and fielded well, took some good catches.”
Jye Paterson (2-17), Blake Murphy (2-21) and Luke Constable (2-28) all bowled well while Tyson Rennie (41) also retired with the bat and AJ Pretorius made 26. They play Canterbury West today.
Lachlan Cooke (5-11) was the bowling star for the Tamworth Under 15s in their opening game of the Walter Taylor Shield in Armidale.
The Armidale Invitational side made 155 and Tamworth snuck home for a two wicket win, making 8-156 with Cooke “getting us home”.
“The boys were very rusty,” coach Dave Robinson said.
“A lot of them haven’t played for two weeks and it showed. We dropped something like 13 catches.”
