About 7840 households and businesses were affected by the unplanned power outage about 8.11am, with power restored to most by 9.21am.
"Crews responded immediately at 8.11am on Sunday, after the power network automatically switched the South Tamworth zone substation off for safety reasons after sensing a problem," Essential Energy's David Crough said.
"Crews quickly identified the problem and, after ensuring the area was safe, progressively restored power to all affected by 9.21am, by rerouting power around the problem using an alternative powerline.
"The unplanned power interruption was the result of the weather on Sunday morning, and crews hoped to have the main powerline fixed by midday."
One hundred households and businesses in Attunga and surrounds were also without power earlier yesterday morning, caused by storms in the region.
Lightning strikes also caused isolated unplanned power interruptions to about 30 households and businesses across the Essential Energy network yesterday, with crews working as quickly as they could to restore power to the affected customers.
