Cummings had lost all three previous finals but crashed through for his first success when a 21-16 victor over North Tamworth’s Roy Bridges yesterday afternoon.
He earned the $500 winner’s cheque too after remaining unbeaten all weekend.
He beat Allan Hunt (North Tamworth) 21-9 in a semi-final while Bridges defeated Cory Daley (Sawtell) 21-6 in his semi-final.
Bridges pocketed $200 and the two losing semi-finallists $100 each.
Previous winners of this event were: 1990 Jock Kachel (North Tamworth), 1991 Neville Baguley (Narrabri), 1992 Peter Chaffey (Tamworth City), 1993 John Vella (Workies), 1994 Chris Abbott (Tamworth City), 1995 Beau Wallington (South Tamworth), 1996 Ken Ward (South), 1997 Damon Sullivan (Tamworth City), 1998 Shannon White (Quirindi), 1999 Robbie Wardrop (North Tamworth) and 2000 Jim Matthews (North Tamworth).
Seven of the previous winners have gone on to representative honours with Damon Sullivan having won Tamworth City Easter singles and North Tamworth summer singles. Wallington also won the recent Tamworth City Easter singles.
