Mayor Russell Webb open to annual festival over Easter long weekend, separate to TCMF

Mayor Russell Webb said given many of the tens of thousands of people that travelled to Tamworth last week were a different crowd to what the festival normally gets, there is an opportunity to cash in.

While he said TCMF in January will always remain top dog, he believes it would be silly not to investigate whether other, smaller events could draw people to the city throughout the year.

"I think it's something we certainly have to have a discussion about, and we need to have those discussions over the coming months and work out what's good for the city," he said.

"Also, what would be a good outcome in terms of the music festival and the continuing music activities in the city and the region moving into the future."

Cr Webb said if anything was to take place around the April school holidays, it would likely also be "associated with country music or of a similar genre".

Pub Group owner Craig Power sits on the TCMF stakeholders' committee, and said it had also looked at whether a major drawcard could be moved to a different date in an effort to bring people back to the region.

While also acknowledging nothing will compare to the full-sized festival in January, it would be great for the region's businesses to have some more events throughout the year that give them a shot in the arm.

"It was a successful week and good for Tamworth, so anything we can do over those school holiday periods is good for town," he said.

"Council and stakeholders are possibly thinking about moving an event to those Easter holidays permanently."

At this stage, he said the committee was looking at whether Hats off to Country could be moved from its regular timeslot into April.
