MAJOR work on a critical road to Tamworth hospital will see detours on Dean Street for the next three-and-a-half months.

The $1.5 million project includes water main works and repairs to the road that has been the subject of community complaints as a major thoroughfare for ambulances.
Contractors will work on a 680 metre section of Dean Street in North Tamworth, between North Street and the hospital. A council spokesman said the main has a history of leaks.

"Work is being completed by council's construction teams, who will replace around 30 metres of water main each day, with work expected to take between 14 and 20 weeks to complete," he said.
Detour signs are in place to direct traffic around the area as needed.
