Tamworth region snow: New England Highway reopened with warning but other local roads still closed due to snow and icy conditions

Those that must drive on that section of the New England Highway have been told to exercise extreme caution and be prepared for environmental conditions to change quickly.

The warning comes after heavy snow and feezing cold conditions in the area have caused the white stuff and ice to cover roads.

Several other local roads in the Tamworth region remain closed due to snow and ice.

ROADS in the region remain closed after heavy snow earlier in the week, but some main routes have reopened.

The New England Highway between Armidale and Glen Innes was closed overnight on Thursday due to icy and slippery conditions, but was reopened on Friday morning.

People travelling in snow-affected areas have been urged to drive with caution and be aware of the environmental conditions.

Thunderbolts Way between Lake Road and Nowendoc Road has been closed for the past day, and remained closed in both directions this morning.

Topdale Road, near Niangala, also remained closed due to heavy snowfalls. Locals reported more than 18cm of snow fell on Thursday in areas like Niangala.

Brackendale Road, about 20km south of the Oxley Highway intersetion, is closed as a result of the polar blast causing icy conditions.

The Oxley Highway itself is open between Bendemeer and Walcha.

Weabonga Road at Ogunbil Road has been closed due to wet and slippery conditions.

Ogunbil Road has been shut in both directions, including Port Stephens Cutting. There is also no access from Nowendoc Road or Weabonga Road.

Duncans Creak Road near Hanging Rock has been closed due to wet, snowy and slippery conditions.

Barry Road, which also goes to Hanging Rock, has been shut to all traffic at the Nundle intersection.

Shearers Road and Morrisons Gap Road are also closed south of Hanging Rock.

Anyone tempted to go and see the snow should be very cautious - especially on slippery roads - and obey all road closed signs.
