A MAJOR sports event will be given free use of the Sports Dome, Gipps Street fields and Riverside precinct to showcase the city's sporting facilities.

Almost 5000 athletes will head to Tamworth for the National Primary Games, bringing with them an expected $1.6 million in economic benefits.
Councillor Juanita Wilson said she sees it as a seeding event to grow the future sports leaders in Tamworth.
"This is an excellent program and an excellent event, it certainly attracts a huge number of people to Tamworth and that financial input is significant," she said.
Tamworth Regional Council has approved a $7,500 fee waiver request for the Northern Inland Academy of Sport to run the games and keep participation costs as low as possible.

Councillor Helen Tickle said the event showcases the town's excellent sporting facilities, Tamworth and the region.
"It has tremendous economic benefit," she said.
"It's a health and wellbeing activity as well which we all know is important for all of us and our communities.
"Fantastic to see 8 to 14 year olds participating in this number."
The National Primary Games are on in Tamworth from July 10 to 11.
The council voted unanimously to support the event.
