It was 1998 and Ferris was a junior at the time, playing in one of the lower divisions.
Not long after, Ferris made the step up to Division A and, other than a few years when he wasn't based in Tamworth, has been chasing a title since.
They have come close, the most recent time being the last carnival in 2019 when Tamworth went down in the final to Interport.
Giving Ferris confidence heading into the 2021 carnival is the makeup of the side this year.
"The structure is very similar, a few guys are different but the bulk of the guys are the same," Ferris said.
"It's hard to see who's going to be coming for other teams so depending on their lineups and that kind of thing, we're looking to be very competitive and take games away from guys that don't expect it."

Ferris expects the home ground advantage, and everything that comes with it, to spur his troops along as well.
"Not having to travel is the first thing. We're not camped in hotels, that's an advantage to start off with and family and friends coming down to watch helps. It makes you dig a bit deeper," Ferris said.
This weekend also doubles up as the representative side's first carnival together for the year.
After the long weekend carnival, they'll head north in August.
"We have a carnival in eight weeks in Lismore so we're building up to that," Ferris said.
"This is good preparation for that that carnival [in Lismore] and they often pick a rep side from that carnival in August."
Tamworth's first game is at 10.15am on Saturday. Games start at 8.10am on Saturday and Sunday.
The grand finals will be held at 11am on Monday.
