Tamworth bin pick-up: new seven year waste contract to see red bin pick-up reduced to fortnightly

The plan is to reduce the amount of red bin waste if the council's $15 million Organic Waste Recycling Facility goes ahead.

Residents would be provided with kitchen caddy's to collect scraps, or throw them directly in the green bin to be picked up weekly from July 2022.

Data from similar service roll outs across the country show the contents of the red bin could reduce by as much as 17 per cent, a TRC spokeswoman said.

"Council carefully considered the continuation of the Bulky Household Waste Collection service when placing the new Kerbside Collection Waste Contract on exhibition," she said.

"It was agreed that tenderers would not be asked to include this service in their tender for community safety, litter and environmental reasons.

"If the council wished to, it could enter into negotiations with the contractor to reinstate the Bulky Household Waste Collection but this would come at a cost."

Orange City Council offers a 240L food organics and garden organics (FOGO) pick-up and the usual weekly red bin for $456 per household each year.

That's $134 more compared to Tamworth for the same service in this financial year, a TRC spokeswoman said.

"The additional charge of $134 is on top of the existing domestic waste management charge," she said.

"The new collection contract will remain as weekly red bin collection service and remain this way until we have enough information to determine what the FOGO diversion rates are."

The council expected a final decision on the Organic Waste Recycling Facility to be made in late June or early July and would create compost-type products.

The last bulky waste collection starts on June 14.
