"We acknowledge the commitment and dedication of teaching and non-teaching staff and the school leadership in meeting the needs of their students.
"The majority of the vacancies are filled by qualified teachers in a temporary or casual capacity and we have active recruitment underway for employment across our schools".
The department has been told by the executive principal that the modified timetable in operation was required "following notification that two staff members were unable to work due to illness".
"All students were supervised," the statement read.
It comes after morale hit an all time low at Walgett Community College, with teachers stating they are now unable to deliver education as normal after being "two staff down" on top of already dire vacancies.
On Thursday, a "variation of routine" was put in place until further notice, as part of Education Department guidelines. The NSW Teacher's Federation said "no subjects can be delivered due to not enough staff".
The Federation members have demanded the department communicates the new routine to parents and guardians of the students, who are now not receiving "a high quality" education.

"The government needs to be held accountable for the current situation at Walgett Community College high school and the detrimental impact this is having on the students."
