After moving to the region from Maitland, he was a player in Moree and Gunnedah before serving on the committee at Tamworth City as secretary and president.
Mallon finished up at Tamworth City after the club won the competition in 1982 before having "a good break away".

While the members met up once a month for their coffee club meetings, they weren't able to get out into the community like they normally would due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Not not any more, though.
"We're all pumped up and ready to go," Mallon said of the year ahead.
Tuesday marked the Men of League's return when they joined residents at Nazareth House to kick off their tipping competition.
"They've had a tipping competition out here for many years and Men of League were invited to come along and help start the competition which we love doing," Mallon said.
The Men of League plan to ramp up their fundraising again in 2021 and rugby league fans will no doubt see them all over the place.

Mallon takes over from Kevin Robinson who was Tamworth president for the better part of a decade.
He was there to kick-start the Tamworth Men of League chapter and Mallon said he had big shoes to fill.
"He's the bloke that reinvigorated Men of League, not only here but in the North West, too," Mallon said.
"He's the bloke that put it back on the map and now we need to keep it so we don't sink into the ocean."
